Raja Pervaiz Ashraf likely to elect new speaker National Assembly unopposed
Former PM and senior PPP leader Raja Pervaiz Ashraf is the only candidate who submitted nomination papers for speaker's election tomorrow
Senior PPP
leader and former Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf is likely to elect unopposed
as new speaker of National Assembly as no other candidate submitted nomination
papers to contest the election.
The session
of the National Assembly to elect the speaker and to vote on the motion of no-confidence
against deputy speaker Qasim Suri will take place tomorrow April 16. The deputy
speaker Qasim Suri earlier changed the schedule of the national Assembly
session from April 16 to April 22. The Qasim Suri is likely to be ousted from his
position tomorrow.
Raja Pervaiz
Ashraf's nomination papers for the National Assembly speaker's slot have been
submitted as he seeks to assume the office that fell vacant after the
resignation of speaker Asad Qaiser. He is the joint candidate of the coalition
government.
PTI's Asad
Qaiser had stepped down from office on April 9 — on the day Islamabad witnessed
intense political activities when the voting on the no-confidence motion was
set to take place.
Following
his resignation, MNA Ayaz Sadiq chaired the session, and on April 10 at
midnight, Khan was voted out of power, making him the first prime minister to
be ousted through the democratic process.
